The UK defence industry has an annual turnover of circa. £25 billion and directly employs around 133,000 people, with a similar number of indirect employees, while the UK security sector has an annual turnover of around £18 billion and employs 124,000 people. The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) recognise the need to build modernised defence that is able to outpace adversaries and retain their adaptive edge. It also has an objective to spend 25% of its budget with SMEs.
Science and technology is considered one of the most important components of national security. The ability to advance, exploit and deliver new science and technology advances will be of critical importance to security over the next decade.
