In 2018-19, the value of the UK space sector was £16.4 billion (~5% of the global space economy) with over 45,000 direct employees. The UK Government’s target is to make the UK 10% of the global space economy by 2030, with the aim for the UK to become a one stop shop access in to Space.

Manufacturing technologies are critical enablers to achieve the targets set for the space sector. Collaborating internationally is critical for the UK to grow its export by 60%.

Some of the challenges and opportunities currently facing the UK space sector include new 5-7 year business models for space primes; a limbo period to assess performance of the first ‘Mega constellations’ and the need to move towards a mass production approach.

To support new technology adoption in the sector, there is a need for regulation and standards to be updated and refreshed.
