Positive steps but more direction needed
Civil Nuclear
Power & Energy
Andrew Bowfield, Nuclear Expert and Senior Business Development Manager at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), comments on the Government’s latest plans to revive civilian nuclear power across the UK:
The latest announcement provides the much-needed confidence that businesses across the nuclear supply chain have been waiting for. It’s particularly encouraging to see planning issues, previously a major bottleneck, being addressed.
The proposed Government reforms will be crucial to the successful delivery of future programmes, especially as we look to innovative technologies, such as small nuclear reactors (SMRs), to efficiently expand our nuclear capacity. But while this is a step in the right direction, there is still no firm commitment in nuclear energy beyond Hinckley Point C. For the sector to truly thrive, we need a clear and decisive signal from the Government to spark investment in future projects.
